ORONO, Maine –
Amanda Pelkey scored the game-winning goal on a breakaway with 1:15 left in overtime as Vermont defeated Maine 2-1 Saturday afternoon in Hockey East action from Alfond Arena.
The Black Bears opened the scoring late in the first period with an even strength tally. Victoria Hummel scored her second goal of the season with 2:17 left in opening frame to give Maine the early lead. Kristin Gilmour and Eve Boissonneault assisted on Hummel's first goal since October 3
rd when she scored in overtime as Maine defeated Robert Morris.
With 48 seconds left in the first period the Black Bears received the first penalty of the game for too many players on the ice.
Dayna Colang scored her team-leading 16
th goal of the season on the ensuing power play 67 seconds into the second period to tie the game at one.
Brittany Zuback and
Amanda Drobot picked up the assists as Colang extended her goal-scoring streak to five-games.
The Catamounts outshot Maine 37-13 in the second and third period but they couldn't solve Meghann Treacy (53 saves) for the go-ahead goal.
Madison Litchfield made 25 saves in regulation for Vermont.
In overtime Pelkey came through for the Catamounts as she scored on a breakaway to record her 100
th career point and deliver a huge league win for Vermont. Pelkey, a native Vermonter, is the first Catamount to reach the century mark.
Rachael Ade picked up the lone assist on Pelkey's third game-winning goal of the season.
"What a way for Amanda to score her 100
th point," said head coach
Jim Plumer. "This was a game where we stayed focused for three-plus periods and finally broke through after a great deal of offensive pressure. It was a great team win."
With the win the Catamounts are now two points behind New Hampshire for sixth place in Hockey East. Vermont hosts the Wildcats next weekend in a two-game series at Gutterson Fieldhouse. Vermont hosts the Wildcats at 7 p.m. on Friday night and again at 4 p.m. on Saturday.
