BOSTON – Junior forward Kayla Tutino set a new Hockey East tournament record with four goals as the seventh-ranked Boston U Terriers defeated Vermont 8-1 Friday night at Walter Brown Arena in game one of the Hockey East quarterfinals.
Tutino opened the scoring 4:23 into the first period after some nice passing in transition. Tutino entered the Vermont zone and dropped the puck back to Victoria Bach who passed it back to Tutino for a one-timer past Vermont's
Madison Litchfield. Marie-Philip Poulin was credited with the additional assist on Tutino's 10
th goal of the year.
Minutes later Tutino struck again to give the Terriers a two-goal lead 6:55 into the opening period. Again Tutino dropped the puck back, this time to Sarah Lefort and Lefort fired a shot on net. Litchfield made a blocker save but the rebound went right to Tutino who tapped it in.
Poulin picked up another assist on Tutino's second goal of the game. With the assist Poulin became the all-time Hockey East tournament-scoring leader, passing former Terrier Isabel Menard.
Rebecca Leslie made it a 3-0 Terrier lead at the 10:07 mark of the first period. Her 12
th goal of the season was assisted by Bach and Maddie Elia. Following Leslie's tally head coach
Jim Plumer used his timeout in an attempt to regroup.
Vermont was able to reclaim some momentum until the Terriers were given a power play opportunity with 5:07 left in the first period. 26 seconds later Tutino completed a first period hat trick to make it 4-0. It was Tutino's first career hat trick.
Leslie added another goal 47 seconds later to give Boston U a five-goal cushion they took into the first intermission. It was the first time the Terriers have scored five in a period since doing it against Vermont on January 25, 2015.
The Catamounts
Amanda Pelkey got one back early in the second period.
Sarah Campbell was in on a one-on-one and she fired a backhand shot off the post. The rebound was clear to the point where
Katherine Pate fired back down low.
Dayna Colang went behind the net and found Pelkey who buried 14
th goal of the season 3:23 in the middle frame.
19 seconds later the Terriers answered as Tutino collected her fourth goal of the night. She became the first player in Hockey East tournament history to score four goals in a game.
The Terriers added two more goals to close out the scoring and clinch the first game of the quarterfinal series. Rebecca Russo scored her 10
th of the season with 4:29 left in the second period and then Dakota Woodworth scored her fourth of the season with 49 seconds left in regulation.
"Credit to Boston U, they came out hungry and we didn't match their intensity," said head coach
Jim Plumer. " We've got to be ready to play tomorrow from the opening faceoff."
Vermont will look to keep its season alive tomorrow afternoon as the team's faceoff at 3 p.m. in game two at Walter Brown Arena.
NOTES: Vermont's streak of nine consecutive games with a power play goal was snapped … The seven-seed is now 0-3 all-time in Hockey East tournament history.
