ABOUT VERMONTThe Catamounts moved to 1-0 on the year following a season-opening 12-11 overtime victory at Colgate this past Saturday. UVM has now defeated the Raiders in the opener in three of the last four seasons. Vermont is coming off its most successful campaign in program history in 2014 as the Catamounts set a team record with 12 victories and reached the America East Semifinals for the second consecutive year. The Catamounts return 57% of their scoring from last season and added six newcomers to the roster, including five freshmen and one junior.
Senior
Jessica Roach and junior
Vanessa VanderZalm, two of UVM's regional All-Americans and America East All-Conference First Team members from a season ago, will look to lead the Vermont attack once again in 2015. The two combined for 132 points on 92 goals and 40 assists last season while both finishing in the top three on the team in scoring.
Meg Hopkins, who posted the victory in net for UVM in the season opener, returns for her senior year after combining with then-freshmen
Mackenzie Maher to post a 9.45 goals against average and .436 save percentage last season.
LAST TIME OUTIn the season opener at Colgate, Vermont battled back in snowy conditions to defeat the Raiders by a score of 12-11 in overtime. Sophomore
Alex Bernier netted the go ahead goal on a free-position attempt in overtime, and the Catamount defense shut down Colgate to hold on for the victory. Roach led all scorers with four tallies in the contest, while VanderZalm (3 goals),
Alison Bolt (2) and
Meredith Moore (2) each registered multi-goal performances.
PLAYERS OF THE WEEKIn the first America East weekly awards of the season, Vermont took home two of the three honors. Roach was tabbed the America East Offensive Player of the Week and Hopkins earned the Defensive Player of the Week Award. Roach tallied three of her four scores in the first half, including the final goal of the period to give Vermont its first lead of the contest. The senior captain sits just five goals shy of reaching the 100-goal plateau for her career. Hopkins played all 66 minutes in net for Vermont and made seven saves to collect the seventh victory of her career.
VANDERZALM REACHES 100With three points in the contest against Colgate, VanderZalm reached 100 points for her career early in her third season with the program. The former All-American at Penn State has guided the Catamounts to the America East Semifinals four times during her tenure, including each of the last two seasons.
HONORING VANESSA COXPrior to Saturday's game versus Boston College, Vermont Athletics will honor former Catamount Vanessa Cox '05 with a moment of silence.
