BOSTON – Victoria Bach and Rebecca Leslie each had two goals to lead No. 6 Boston U to a 9-2 win over Vermont in Hockey East action from Walter Brown Arena Sunday afternoon.
After being shut out on Saturday the Terriers wasted no time getting on the board this afternoon. 55 seconds into the first period Lillian Braga scored her second goal of the season to give Boston U their first lead of the weekend series. Samantha Sutherland and Maddie Elia earned assists on the even strength tally.
The Terriers made it 3-0 with two goals in 43 seconds midway through the first period. Bach scored her first goal of the afternoon at the 8:04 mark then Diana Bennett scored her first of the season with 11:13 left in the opening frame.
Following the quick start Vermont made a goaltending change switching from
Molly Depew to
Madison Litchfield. Litchfield gave up two more first period goals as Rebecca Leslie and Rebecca Russo tallied to give the Terriers a five-goal lead heading into the first intermission.
The Terriers were able to score three more times against Litchfield and the Catamounts in the second period. Bach added her 13
th of the season 2:28 into the frame, then Marie-Philip Poulin picked up her 17
th of the season three minutes later. Sutherland made it 8-0 with her second goal of the season with 1:13 left in the second.
For the third period the Catamounts went back to Depew in net. Over the course of the game Depew and Litchfield made 17 saves for Vermont.
Dayna Colang scored 4:57 into the third to get Vermont on the board.
Victoria Andreakos and
Mackenzie MacNeil assisted on Colang's 11
th goal of the season.
Leslie closed out the scoring for Boston U 7:30 into the third period. Her ninth goal of the season assisted by Bach made it 9-1 for the Terriers.
Vermont scored its second goal of the game on the power play to close out the scoring with 10:24 left in the third period.
Taylor Willard's third goal of the season was assisted by
Amanda Drobot and
Kourtney Menches.
"It was a tough way to end what started as an excellent weekend," said head coach
Jim Plumer. "Boston U came out flying and grabbed the momentum from the outset. It was good to get two points but I certainly would have liked us to play better."
The Catamounts return home next weekend as they Northeastern and Providence on alumnae weekend. Vermont will face the Huskies at 7 p.m. on Friday night before facing the Friars on Super Bowl Sunday at 2 p.m.
