UConn Rallies to Defeat Women’s Hockey Sunday Afternoon

Final Score: UConn 4, Vermont 3 | Box Score
STORRS, Conn.
– Sarah MacDonnell scored the game-winning goal with 5:09 left in the third period to lift Connecticut past Vermont 4-3 as the Huskies swept the Hockey East weekend series Sunday afternoon at the Freitas Ice Forum.

Vermont opened the scoring with 4:39 left in the first period. Bridget Baker corralled a loose puck in the slot and fired a wrist shot past UConn goaltender Annie Belanger for her fourth goal of the season. Mackenzie MacNeil and Rachael Ade assisted on the even strength tally.

The same line struck again for the Catamounts just minutes later. In transition Baker fired a shot on net and MacNeil crashed the net and was able to push the rebound past Belanger for her first career goal. MacNeil's tally gave Vermont a 2-0 lead with 1:59 left in the first period.

In the second period the Catamounts searched for a three-goal lead as they outshot UConn 16-7. Belanger shut the door as the Huskies killed off two Vermont power plays before scoring a momentum-changing goal late in the second period.

On a two-on-two rush during a Connecticut power play Emily Snodgrass skated into the slot and fired a high wrist shot past Vermont's Molly Depew for her team-leading 12th goal of the season. Snodgrass' power play tally with 1:59 left in the second was assisted by Leah Lum.

The Huskies tied the game at two apiece 8:26 into the third period. Amidst a mad scramble in front of Depew Kayla Campero was able to push the puck in for her fourth goal of the season. Snodgrass and MacDonnell were credited with assists on the play.

With 6:42 left in the third Connecticut scored the go-ahead goal on a nice passing play. Margaret Zimmer faked a point shot and passed through a set Vermont players down low to Caitlin Hewes who was able to beat Depew with a backhand for her second goal of the season.

The Catamounts were able to answer right back 24 seconds later on the power play. A Gina Repaci point shot was blocked by a UConn defenseman, and Sarah Campbell tried to corral the loose puck. As Campbell lost control in traffic Brittany Zuback was able to spin and fire a shot past Belanger for her 15th goal of the season. With the power play tally Zuback is now tied for the NCAA lead with seven this season.

Minutes later the Huskies took advantage of their own power play opportunity as they scored the game-winning goal. A Caitlin Hewes point shot was deflected in front of the net and it bounced towards the net. MacDonnell was able to redirect the bouncing puck past Depew at the 14:51 mark as she scored her second career game-winning goal.

"Very disappointing weekend for us," said head coach Jim Plumer. "We squandered a good start to the game and our lack of discipline cost us the game. Until we play a full 60 minutes of smart, disciplined hockey we won't reach our potential."

The Catamounts return to Gutterson Fieldhouse next weekend as they host No. 1 Boston College in a two-game series. Vermont hosts the undefeated Eagles at 2 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

On Saturday UVM will join in the nationwide effort to raise awareness and funds for breast cancer research as part of the Rally Against Cancer initiative presented by Otter Creek Awnings and Vermont Custom Closets.

In recognition of the ongoing fight against cancer, Vermont will be wearing special edition "pink" jerseys during the game on Saturday.

Entering its ninth season, the Hockey East Skating Strides program has raised over $240,000 for various breast cancer charities across the league.  Locally, the money raised from this Saturday's game will be donated to the Vermont Cancer Center.
