HARRISONBURG, Va. – The Vermont men's soccer team won the Fairfield Inn by Marriot JMU Invitational and moved to 2-0 on the season with a 3-1 victory over Appalachian State (0-1-1).
"We had a really good team effort today," said Vermont head coach
Jesse Cormier. "We knew going in with the heat and conditions we needed a major contribution from the bench and to use our depth, and that played out. Our bench did a fantastic job and provided great energy. This is a great start, the guys had a good weekend and now we have to work to maintain consistency and continue to improve."
The Catamounts surrendered the first goal of the game off a free kick. At 18:58, Alex Herbst tapped the re-start service to Patrick Harrow who was able to find the back of the net and put the Mountaineers up 1-0.
The Catamounts answered with two goals in the span of one minute.
Teddy Gula netted the equalizer at 38:39 of the match. Teammate
Daniel Giron's header off the post deflected to Gula who was able to finish off the scoring opportunity.
Nile Walwyn scored what proved to be the game-winner at 39:35. After a Vermont corner kick, the Appalachian State clearance was not clean and Walwyn was able to knock in his first goal of the season to put Vermont up 2-1.
