BURLINGTON. Vt. – Matt Townsend's jumper with 4.1 seconds remaining in regulation lifted the Yale Bulldogs to a 57-56 win over Vermont in non-conference men's basketball action at Patrick Gymnasium on Thursday night.
Yale, ranked No. 15 in the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top-25 Poll, moves to 9-3 overall, while Vermont falls to 5-5 on the season.

Kurt Steidl responded with his second straight layup and was fouled on the play. He converted the three-point play to give UVM a 53-52 lead with 2:27 left.
Javier Duren sank a 3-pointer on the next possession to shove the Bulldogs in front 55-53 with 1:56 left. Steidl matched Duren with a 3-pointer of his own to push Vermont back into the lead, 56-55, with 1:34 left.
Yale missed a 3-pointer on its next possession. Vermont worked the shot clock down, but
Dre Wills' layup was blocked by Duren. The Catamounts tried to set up a play with one second left on the shot clock but could not get a shot off in time and Yale went down the court where Townsend was able to bury the game-winning jumper from just inside the 3-point line.
Vermont had possession with two seconds left and called timeout. The Bulldogs picked off the ensuing inbounds pass to secure the win.
The game was tightly contested throughout. The Catamounts biggest lead was six points at the 9:20 mark of the first half. Yale rattled off eight straight points to take a 21-19 lead with 5:16 left in the half and led 28-24 at the break.
Steidl finished the night with a game-high 18 points, one shy of his career high, to lead the Catamounts.
Ethan O'Day added 10 points and
Dre Wills grabbed a game-high eight rebounds and handed out six assists.
Jack Montague led the Bulldogs with 12 points and Justin Sears chipped in 11 to round out the leading scorers for Yale.
