Final Score: Northeastern 5, Vermont 1 | Box Score
BOSTON – McKenna Brand scored two first period goals and the Northeastern Huskies didn't look back defeating Vermont 5-1 Sunday afternoon in Hockey East action at Matthews Arena.
The Huskies opened the scoring with their third power play goal of the weekend series. Kendall Coyne passed back to the point and Jordan Krause skated along the blue line and fired a wrist shot that Brand tipped past Vermont goaltender
Molly Depew to make it 1-0 8:25 into the opening period.
Brand added another tally, her sixth of the season, at the 11-minute mark of the first period. Once again she tipped a Krause point shot past Depew to give the Huskies a early two-goal lead. Heather Mottau was credited with the secondary assist on the even strength goal.
Northeastern stretched its lead to three with an early second period goal off a won faceoff in the Vermont zone. Coyne won the faceoff forward and got a quick shot off that Depew stopped but sophomore forward Melissa Hagney buried the rebound for her first goal of the season 5:44 into the second frame.
The Catamounts got on the board 1:14 into the third period.
Amanda Pelkey skated behind the Northeastern net and centered a pass to
Dayna Colang for a one-timer. Northeastern's Chloe Desjardins made the initial save but the rebound was jammed home by Colang for her eighth goal of the season.
As they did all weekend the Huskies quickly countered with another goal of their own. Denisa Krizova took advantage of a broken play in the Vermont zone and she walked in alone on Depew and beat her with a backhand for her fourth goal of the season.
Hayley Scamurra closed out the scoring with her fourth goal of the weekend on a two-on-one advantage. Scamurra skated into the slot and fired a shot just under the crossbar to make it 5-1 in favor of the Huskies. Lucie Povova and Lauren Kelly earned assists on Scamurra's seventh goal of the season.
Depew made a career high 41 saves for Vermont in her second career Hockey East start. Desjardins made 37 saves for Northeastern as she picked up her fourth win of the season.
"All the credit goes to Northeastern for their opportunistic play," said head coach
Jim Plumer. "They converted their chances and we struggled to finish. We need to clean up our defensive effort going forward, it will be our main priority."
The Catamounts return home next weekend as they host Maine in a two-game Hockey East series. It will be the team's first meeting since their historic triple overtime game in the Hockey East Quarterfinals. The teams will faceoff at 4 p.m. on Saturday and then again at 2 p.m. on Sunday.
NOTES: Dayna Colang and
