VERMONT WOMEN'S HOCKEY NOTEBOOKThe University of Vermont women's hockey team (6-4-1, 1-2-0 HEA) continues its six-game road trip as they travel to Syracuse (3-4-5, 2-1-1 CHA) this weekend. The Catamounts face the Orange at 7 p.m. on Friday night and at 3 p.m. on Saturday afternoon.
TRIO OF FORWARDS LEADING THE CATAMOUNTS OFFENSIVELYDayna Colang,
Amanda Pelkey and
Brittany Zuback were the Catamounts top-three offensive players last season and they have picked up right where they left off. All three are averaging a point a game. Zuback leads the team with seven goals while Colang leads the team in assists with seven.
SPECIAL TEAMS CONTINUING TO DELIVERVermont's power play and penalty kill are both ranked sixth in the NCAA right now. The Catamounts have given up just three goals this season while shorthanded killing off 91.2% of opponents' chances. The power play is 9-for-42 on the season good for 21.4%.
Brittany Zuback is tied for second in the country with four power play goals.
DROBOT ADDING OFFENSE FROM BLUE LINE One of three freshmen starting on defense for the Catamounts
Amanda Drobot has been impressive for Vermont offensively and defensively. She has six points, which is tied 22
nd nationally for all defenseman. Only Clarkson's Savannah Harmon (10 Pts) has more points as a rookie defender this season. Drobot is also fifth in scoring amongst all Hockey East rookies.
CATAMOUNTS CLOSING STRONGVermont has outscored its opponents 18-6 in the third period of games this season. It continues a trend as last season the third period was their best. The Catamounts outscored its opponents by 11 over the course of the season and by 15 in league play.
PELKEY MAKES NATIONAL TEAM DEBUT AT FOUR NATIONS CUPSenior co-captain
Amanda Pelkey finished second at the 2014 Four Nations Cup, hosted in Kamloops, British Columbia, in her U.S. Women's National Team debut.
The United States compiled a 2-2-0 record in four games, losing the championship game last Saturday to Canada in a 3-2 shootout decision.
Pelkey played in all four games for the U.S., routinely on a line with Northeastern's Paige Savage and Boston College's Dana Trivigno. Pelkey also saw time on the power play and penalty kill for the U.S.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENTSyracuse: The Orange are 3-4-5 on the year but are coming off one of the programs biggest wins. Last Saturday Syracuse defeated No. 7 Mercyhurst 4-1 in the program's first-ever win against the perennial CHA powerhouse.
Syracuse goaltender Jenn Gilligan was named the CHA Goaltender of the Week after leading the Orange to their historic win with a 28 save performance. The former New Hampshire goaltender is 3-4-4 this season with a 2.97 goals-against average.
Freshman forward Stephanie Grossi is the team's leading scorer. She has two goals and six assists for eight points in 12 games this season.
The Oranges are 0-1-4 in five games against Hockey East teams this season. Syracuse lost 10-2 at Boston College and skated to four consecutive home ties against Northeastern, New Hampshire, Providence, and Connecticut.
After this weekend series with Vermont, which closes out a seven-game home stand, the Orange will play 13 of their next 14 games on the road.
The Catamounts are 0-2-0 all-time against Syracuse with both losses coming in one-goal decisions last season at Gutterson Fieldhouse.
Amanda Pelkey led all Catamounts with four points on the weekend as UVM fell 4-3 and 3-2.
CATAMOUNTS LEAD HOCKEY EAST IN ATTENDANCEFor the second straight season Vermont is leading Hockey East in attendance. The Catamounts are averaging 511 fans per home game. Only two other Hockey East teams are averaging more than 300 fans.
