VERMONT WOMEN'S HOCKEY NOTEBOOKVermont (2-1-1, 0-0-0 HEA) continues non-conference play this weekend as they welcome, the defending CHA tournament champion, RIT (2-1-1, 0-0-0 CHA) to Gutterson Fieldhouse for a two-game series. Faceoff is set for 4 p.m. on Saturday before a 2 p.m. start on Sunday afternoon.
PELKEY NAMED WARRIOR HOCKEY EAST PLAYER OF THE WEEKAmanda Pelkey earned the league accolade for her performance in the Catamounts 4-2 comeback win at Rensselaer last Saturday. Trailing 2-1 entering the third period Pelkey scored two goals and added an assist to lead Vermont to its second win of the season.
Pelkey's second goal was named the Moe's MOEment of the Week.

BAKER AND COLANG LEAD TEAM IN SCORINGForwards
Bridget Baker and
Dayna Colang are currently tied for the team lead in scoring with four points a piece. Baker scored both Vermont goals on the power play in their most recent game, a 2-2 tie against Rensselaer.
POWER PLAY FINDING ITS RHYTHMAfter being shutout in the Catamounts first weekend of action the power play was critical against Rensselaer going 4-for-8. On the season Vermont is now 4-for-16, a 25% rate that is the best in Hockey East and fifth in the NCAA.
Bridget Baker is tied for the Hockey East lead in power play goals, with two.
CATAMOUNTS CLOSING STRONGVermont has outscored its opponents 6-2 in the third period of games this season. In the Catamounts two wins this season they outscored RPI and UND 5-0. It continues a trend as last season the third period was their best. The Catamounts outscored its opponents by 11 over the course of the season and by 15 in league play.
PROMOTIONSFans will receive free admission to the women's game on Saturday with a men's hockey ticket from Friday night's home opener against Clarkson.
Sunday is Youth Hockey Day and there will be a postgame kids conference presented by the DoubleTree in the Hockey Hall of Honor.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENT
RIT: RIT enters the weekend at 2-1-1 after facing two Hockey East teams last weekend at home. The Tigers fell 1-0 to New Hampshire before tying Northeastern 2-2. The defending CHA tournament champions were picked to finish third in CHA preseason coach's poll.
Freshman defenseman Christa Vulgar leads the Tigers in scoring this season with one goal and two assists for three points. Vulgar was teammate of current Catamounts
Taylor Willard and Kaylee Webster with the Chicago Mission U19 team last season.
Senior goaltender Ali Binnington is off to a very good start this season. She has a 2-1-0 record this season and has only given up two goals. She is ranked in the top 5 nationally for goals-against average (0.67) and save percentage (.971).
The Catamounts all-time 2-5-4 in matchups against RIT. Last season the two teams met for the first time as Division I foes at Ritter Arena. The Tigers defeated Vermont 6-0 in the first game before falling 5-2 in the second.
COACH PLUMER'S HISTORY WITH RITIn Division III at Amherst College Coach Plumer was 2-5-1 against the RIT Tigers. In their first meeting Amherst College, in its first ever NCAA tournament appearance, knocked off RIT 2-1 to advance to the DIII semifinals.
All eight of Coach Plumer's previous matchups with Amherst were against RIT's current head coach Scott McDonald.
COLANG AND PELKEY'S HISTORIC GAME AGAINST RITIn Vermont's 5-2 win against RIT last season
Dayna Colang and
Amanda Pelkey matched program records with four points in a single game. Pelkey had two goals and two assists while Colang registered a goal and three assists.
Teammate
Klara Myren also had four points in a game with a two goal and two assist performance at New Hampshire on October 16, 2012.
NEW BENCHMARKS AT VERMONTThe Catamounts established several program records last season including winning 18 games to finish fourth overall in Hockey East. Vermont also won it's first ever Division I playoff game defeating Maine 3-2 in triple overtime to advance to the Hockey East Semifinals.
ALL ACROSS THE MAPThe Catamounts have players from 11 different states (Alaska, California, Florida, Illinois, Maine, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New York, Pennsylvania, South Carolina and Vermont), one Canadian province (Ontario) and one other country (Sweden). Vermont has five players from Ontario more than any other state or province.
PACK THE GUT CHALLENGE PRESENTED BY THE WINDJAMMER NEXT FRIDAYThe Vermont women's hockey team will host the second annual "Pack the Gut Challenge Presented by The Windjammer" on Friday October 24 as they face Union College.
The goal this season is to break last year's single game Hockey East attendance record of 2,028 fans and support the local Meals on Wheels organization. Admission is only $2.
