STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The Stony Brook Seawolves scored midway through the first half and hung on to post a 1-0 win over visiting Vermont in America East women's soccer action on Thursday night at LaValle Stadium.
Stony Brook improves to 5-8-1 overall and 2-2-1 in league play. Vermont falls to 3-10-2 and 1-4-1 in America East.
Stony Brook took a 1-0 lead in the 23rd minute. Tessa Devereaux played a corner kick on the ground to Hannah Groth who was able to fire in a shot and finish far post for her first goal of the season.
The Seawolves took the one goal lead and an 8-5 edge in shots into the half.
Vermont out shot the Seawolves 9-4 in the second stanza. However Stony Brook was able to make the lone goal stand up to pick up the win.
Ashley Castanio finished the game with four stops in the Stony Brook net, while
Coco Speckmaier and
Ally Ramos combined for three saves for the Catamounts.
Vermont will close out the regular season with a pair of home games next week. The Catamounts host Binghamton on Thursday (Oct. 23, 2:30 p.m.) and face Hartford on Sunday (Oct. 26, 1 p.m.) at Virtue Field.
